Yoga is the ancient Indian science of meditation and achieving oneness of body and mind. Many people have been affected and in fact, benefited by it. Often times, it happens that we are not able to do even our daily activities in a proper manner because of all the confusions and thoughts that crowd our mind.

Stress not only affects our physical body but it also affects our emotional and endocrinal system. Yoga can assist you in correcting this.

Now, you might be wondering if this yoga thing is just hype and there is little to do with it. However, if you look at the benefits that it has to offer, you might understand the reason that so many people are loving it.

Yoga amplifies your flexibility. The different postures of yoga help to work various joints of your body. It even includes those joints, which you are not used to working out during your regular exercise. In fact, studies show that people with relatively inflexible bodies showed remarkable increase in their body flexibility after beginning to do yoga, especially in those parts that were often unconsciously neglected in the past.

It also helps to lubricate your joints, tendons and ligaments. The various yoga postures are well-researched and they help to exercise your tendons as well as ligaments.

The different yoga postures and poses help to massage all the internal organs of your body, something that will be otherwise physically impossible to do. In fact, yoga might be only such an exercise that gives such a massage to your internal organs.

Yoga is a wholesome exercise and instead of focusing on any single organ or part of your body, it enriches and enhances the health of your entire body. It also helps to keep away any disease by warning you at the onset. It develops an strange kind of sense of the approaching health disorder in the person performing yoga.

It helps to detoxify your body. It gives a gentle stretching exercise to your joints and muscles and ensures that all the part of your body get their optimum supply of blood. In fact, it works to flush out all toxins from every corner of your body while also providing your body enough nourishment. This gives you added benefits such as delayed aging, an increase in your energy as well as a noticeable increase in your joy of life.

If you want to tone your muscles, then yoga is for you. On the contrary, if you simply want to strengthen your otherwise weak muscles and shed some extra fat, then yoga will assist you in that.

Now, all of these physical advantages that you can avail from yoga are in fact, only a few side effects. The real goal or aim of yoga is to achieve a unification of mind and body so that you can experience actual quantum benefits.

Yoga helps to transform you and for that fact, it is quite simple. The advanced poses of yoga might baffle and even seem too difficult to the novices. However, these poses that involve basic stretching of your muscles actually cause your life to transform.

Now, you would ask me what is so different about Yoga, don’t we always stretch our muscles before we exercise at the gym. However, yoga is more than that.

In fact, yoga integrates your breath as well as consciousness with the physical stretches in a unique manner. Yoga helps us gain a better insight of ourselves by means of breath and then putting your focus on it inside your body. This makes us more conscious of our individuality. It helps us to start the process of transforming.

This is the reason that the state in which you perform yoga is not so important. You can stiff, flexible, in pain, distracted or just your usual self. It is more of a journey to discover and not to fit in to some external mold.

In fact, experts say that you can accept any asana only gradually. It is not advisable to strain yourself or to judge yourself in the case if you are not able to do it well. Actually, the posture is only a potential outcome, the real thing is taking the journey.

The different asanas of yoga are a method to prepare yourself fully for meeting the various challenges that you face in your life and to do so in such a manner that it does not make us fall down or cause us to lose our balance, rather it increases the capacity with which we adapt to these changes around us.

They helps us become more sensitive as well as aware of the things that are really inside us and our minds. It keeps our self knowledge growing and provides us with a complete picture. It helps us understand our responses in particular situations and help us understand the reason for such responses.

When doubts, fears or worries distract us or preoccupy our minds, or when the hope of some required outcome or result holds our minds captive, our vital energy begins to leak and diffuse.

With regular yoga practice, you can clear all the distractions and redirect your vital energy that has diffused within yourself. This is the energetic facet of self-mastery.

Yoga helps you to gain the knowledge of your own self as a whole. It helps you to discover individuality while also understanding that you are a part of that wholeness, which is in everything.

Many a times, what a million words cannot express, a single word can. The word is yoga. In fact, yoga is more than a simple word; it is a huge subject that has several aspects and dimensions to it.

It is believed and it has been quoted in ancient books that yoga helps you to achieve efficiency in work.

Your job or profession is not that important, what matters is what you gain from your work.

Yoga has another meaning and that is union. Yoga involves the union of your with your mind or your mind with your spirit. In fact, it is traditionally believed that the actual union is between the consciousness of an individual and universal consciousness.

Yoga cannot be explained in a few words. In fact, it requires deep study to understand it. In fact, a mere introduction can take a few books. However, here are a few observations concerning yoga that might be helpful to you for understanding yoga.

Yoga is concerned with your body’s physical health.

Yoga is concerned with your body’s mental health.

Yoga is concerned with the intellectual health.

Above all, yoga has every concern with your spirit.

The aim of yoga is to achieve this ultimate stage. You cannot expect to get there by making any assertions, arguments, counter arguments or explanations. It is similar to this: you can achieve silence only through silence.

Yoga has a lot to do with the way you breathe. It is more about channeling your energy through your breath. You might have often linked yoga with meditation. In fact, yoga cannot be thought of by separating it from the basic art of meditation.

Meditation involves the basic appreciation of the nature of our human body and thinking about the one who has the control over it at all times.

Karma Yoga is about doing your duty without expecting or asking for any reward. If you talk about this to any individual of the present generation then they might not fully understand or respond to this principle.

While it might be a difficult principle to understand or to follow, it is actually saying that you need to perform your duty without going and asking for your reward. The meaning behind this is that while you do not ask for your reward, you will gain that reward at the right time.

It is similar to the law that every action has a reaction and the reaction is as intense as the action is. This is one place where scientists can come to terms with spiritualists.

Yoga can help to improve many medical conditions. You can reduce any negative effects of lung disease, infertility, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, insomnia, joint pain as well as hypertension. Not only the people practicing yoga but also medical professionals accept the benefits that yoga offers.

Stress is a major element that can lead to some sickness. In fact, although it originates in our minds, it does not stay there. It creeps through our entire body, slowly eating away at all of our organs and causing several sicknesses.

Yoga can be a great stress-buster. Here is a list of the several problems that are induced through stress including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, cardio-vascular disease, irritable bowel syndrome, reproductive problems, diabetes, colitis, many autoimmune diseases as well as reduced immunity.

Stress can also affect your metabolism. When you are stressed your sympathetic nervous system might respond in two ways, “fight or flight.” As a result, you become to experience an increase in your blood pressure because of an increase in your heart rate, followed by shallow breathing and your muscles tensing up. This is what you experience on the outside. On the inside, blood flow to your internal organs as well as processes, which are not top priority, including processes such as elimination and digestion will be shut down.

This is a state of increased awareness and it prepares our body to respond to the external stimuli. In both situations, your body is prepared to take action, both physically as well as mentally. If this is for a short term, it is no problem. However, this kind of state over a long period can cause a lot of problems for you.

Now, once the elements that triggered the flight or fight response are gone, another counter response called the relaxation response is triggered. You can induce this response by taking deep breaths and relaxing muscles. If you will increase the period of this process then you can allow your body to recover quickly, thereby eliminating any harmful effects that stress can induce.

Thus, you can reduce any adverse effects of stress on your health by using special breathing as well as relaxation techniques. It helps your body become focussed on finding the solution instead of coming up with some abrupt response in stressful situations.

There are several undeniable positive effects that yoga has on our health. Nevertheless, these techniques can be used in the form of a support for your healing and certainly not as a sole measure for getting healed. You can combine yoga with conventional techniques of treatment and see wonderful results.

While all types of yoga can be beneficial to you, some specific forms of yoga are very popular owing to the ease of performing them and the benefits that they have to offer.

If you are only a beginner in performing yoga, then you should make sure that you are doing the right yoga according to your specific requirement. You should be aware of the level of your physical fitness as against the one that is required to perform any particular form of yoga.

Iyenga is a common form of yoga that is based mainly on accurate movements and alignment. While performing this yoga, the Iyengar way props including blocks and straps are used. Blocks are generally used for beginners because they might not be as flexible as experts to use straps might. These props help you to relax as well as give you comfort, thereby encouraging better results from the yoga.

Power yoga or the Ashtanga is very popular. The name power yoga is given owing to the variety of powerful movements you are required to do. Moves such as lunges and push-ups are involved in this yoga. It helps you build strength and develop stamina. People who are looking for different challenging moves generally perform this form of yoga.

Anybody from athletes to gymnasts as well as cyclists love to perform this form of yoga because it balances their concentration better so that they can focus well on their aim of winning a gold.

Hot yoga or Bikram yoga is also very popular. The name is so because it is required to be performed in a very warm or hot room. This yoga helps you to improve and increase flexibility. The heat of the room can help your muscles to stretch more than they normally can. However, because of the involvement of vigorous movements, heart patients cannot perform this yoga.

The Raja yoga is one form of yoga that symbolises the saying that ‘a content mind denotes a content body and soul.’ It implements freedom or liberation by the way of meditation. A key factor for this form of yoga is concentration.

The Bhakti yoga is where all the participants mainly focus on doing self surrender. This is more devotional form of yoga.

While some forms of yoga sound too difficult to do and even shocking, however, you should never go by what perceptions you might have. Try to do the yoga yourself and see if you can do it.

Yoga is a natural remedy to several diseases and you can benefit greatly from this ancient form of fitness.

It is as much important to relax as it is to work. It is important to sleep and take rest if you want to recharge your nervous system and regain your physical, mental and emotional balance.

With all the stress of the daily routine of our jobs, traffic, commuting to and fro between schools, jobs, studies, and all of these responsibilities, it becomes absolutely essential to have some kind of a relaxation technique on to which we can fall back and relax.

With yoga we can relax whenever we want to and effectively too. This form of yoga is called the relaxation pose or the corpse pose.

It is not very difficult, in fact, it is not difficult at all. It does not involve any difficult flexibility exercise. It mainly involves lying down motionless while at the same time applying the combination of mental suggestions and deep square breathing.

You can perform this pose in the following manner:

Begin by lying motionless on the back. Keep your legs and arms slightly extended.

Breathe deeply in the counts of five, that is, in ratio of 5:5:5 involving inhalation, retaining, exhalation.

Continue this for some minutes. After that, make auto suggestions to your limbs beginning from your toes and working your way up while reaffirming mentally that “my toes are relaxing. My feet are relaxed.” Work your way up taking in your internal organs also.

When you have done this for several minutes, resume the initial breathing patterns for another two or three minute.

Then, begin to chant this particular Yogic quote in your mind: “I am that pure consciousness or self” if you are not comfortable saying this then instead you can even say some verse from your any book of your religious faith, anything that energises you; it can be as simple as “I am feeling relaxed and very energized right at this moment.”

Continue to affirm this phrase in your mind for many minutes. After that, roll to the right side. Remain in this position without moving and all the while maintain the breathing pattern for one more minute.

Now, arise from your position.

You can use the timed metronome or even focus of the steady ticking of your wall clock so that you can keep proper timing and sequence. Besides that, you can do this technique in spurts also. You can do this in your office too. Simply sit back and follow the deep breathing patterns and autosuggestions, mainly with closed eyes.

This is a perfectly safe as well as effective way to relax your mind and body. Everybody needs a break, so, take your break with this technique and you will return energised and more productive than ever before.

If you are conversant with Yoga, you know that you can feel a lot of Prana or vital energy near the ocean, open fields, mountains or anywhere where people gather to mediate or to pray such as in a church, temple, mosque, shrine, seminar, etc.

You can use this energy for others by doing simple kind acts everyday. This does not mean you have to become a doormat. However, it does mean doing something kind and even selfless for others.

Here are a few things you can do to project your positive energy towards other people.

First, you should understand that you carry immense potential inside yourself. When you regularly pray or meditate then you can have an unlimited potential even on the outside. These two things will prepare you for working for the betterment of others.

Besides, when you are working to help others, when you need help, you will have plenty of people to help you.

When you wake up every morning, learn to be excited about the new day and greet everyone you meet. It can be your security guard, house cleaner, janitor, cashier, garage attendant or anyone whom you might normally overlook during the day.

Avoid giving any negative criticism to your family, friends, colleagues as well as associates. Learn to be diplomatic before dishing out any advice.

Tell your family everyday, how much you love them.

Learn to be sincere in your efforts and try to treat everybody with equal respect.

If you want to know people and form relationships with them, then you have to spend time with them. Therefore, spend tie with people.

Be generous and start giving. You might not be able to afford to give much. However, giving not only means financially. You can give sincere compliments to someone, a letter, a few flowers, a card, anything that you know will touch them.

Make sure that you can be trusted upon not only by family and friends but also by your colleagues and associates.

Set appropriate goals for your life. While you might feel that these goals are too far off or too unachievable, do not let that deter you from making any. It is always a good thing to set some goals for your life and this can be done at just about any age.

Become friends with like-minded people. They will help to support you as you pursue your goals and they will help to build your positive energy.
Let your positive energy flow and let it affect others positively.

Yoga is considered mainly to be a sort of spiritual exercise. Several Indians consider it to be a way to attain spiritual enlightenment.

You can break down yoga into four main categories namely, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga. Nevertheless, there are several other variations of this popular exercise. The West has welcomed Yoga and several postures are quite popular among the people in the West.

The people in the West mainly view yoga as a form of exercise. Nevertheless, it is a vital part of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. People who follow these religions consider yoga to be more than an exercise; they see it as a way to achieve enlightenment.

Yoga has been around for several thousands of years. Several ancient Indian texts including the Upanishads, Bhagvad Gita mention about the importance of yoga. The yoga that is generally practiced today is more of a combination of several principles of Indian religions and other principles.

The basic aim of the yoga poses is to maintain your health and keep yourself fit. The yoga followers generally chant and perform special breathing techniques. Meditation is an important part of yoga and the yoga establishments in the west usually modify it to suit the people not following Hinduism.

Yoga appeals to people owing to its ability to help you relax your mind as well as your body. It is also a great tool to keep yourself physically fit. Several people find that yoga helps them to function better mentally.

Some yoga performers aim to achieve the Samadhi, a complex state of mind in which an individual achieves ecstasy. People seek to perform yoga due to several varied reasons, depending mainly on their background and religion.

People who follow Hinduism perform yoga to become closer to God. According to Buddhism beliefs, yoga helps you achieve deeper wisdom. People in the west are more focused on an individual and hence, they perform Yoga for self-improvement.

Yoga is an ancient practice and it helps you take full control of your body and mind. Several people who practice yoga believe that yoga will help them gain an insight into reality.

Several people have taken into the “trend” of yoga and they are benefiting also from the regular practise of Yoga. While yoga has its roots firmly placed in the ancient religions of India, yoga in itself is not a religion. People accept it according to their needs and perceptions, but, it benefits all who accept it.

Gita is an ancient book that teaches on how to live and it stresses the importance of karma. Now, karma is your action and the result of that action or its fruits. Hindu saints of ancient times believed that any individual’s life is a direct result of their karma. Good words, thoughts and deeds pave the way to a happy life while your bad words, deeds and thoughts take you into disaster.

Now, karma yoga is that branch or form of yoga, which deals with the karma. Most often, the desires and cravings that are linked with your action bind you. however, you can set yourself free by performing the action but separating yourself from any consequences.

This concept forms the base of karma yoga and the individual who chooses to follow this path is the karma yogi. The behavior of such an individual is mainly of indifference. The world might get the idea that he is uninterested. However, he has in fact, managed to master his desire. In fact, he has also developed an awareness of the actual significance of all the events occurring around him.

This yoga does not interfere with you performing your duty; you can do it, however, it sets you free from any cravings of the subsequent results of that action. This is a difficult attitude to achieve or acquire and the reason is that we always expect to get some results from our actions. When we do not get the expected results, then we tend to get frustrated and resort to negative thinking.

Besides, obsessing about the results can also cause you unnecessary stress, aggression and competition. This is the reason for the increasing stress levels and depression in people, not to mention the ever increasing number of people getting diabetes and heart disease.

Thus, instead of stressing over what the results of your actions are going to be, it only helps to follow what the book of Gita says. It says to do your action but not crave its fruits. This will help you lead a stress free happy life.

An individual who is karma yogi comes upon this realization and therefore, he chooses to follow the path of separation or detachment. However, this will not make him inefficient or even dull. Alternatively, he can channel his energy into whatever job he has on hand and he can finish it with complete energy and vigor, giving it his best shot. Therefore, the results are naturally outstanding because of extraordinary actions. As a result, he now stops chasing pleasure and pleasure is now seen chasing him.
